Practice Gap

Both patients and providers have intersecting social identities (e.g., race, gender, etc.) that play a critical role in their interactions with the healthcare system. However, care providers often do not understand the ways in which intersecting social identities and interlocking systems of oppression can impede health for patients and impact the care provided to patients from marginalized groups, such as Black women. This lecture will highlight the importance of taking intersectionality into account in providing culturally competent, effective care, and reducing health inequities across society.

General Program Learning Objectives

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize, through salient examples, the difference between sex and gender influences on human health and disease.
  2. Identify the social determinants that impact biological systems, leading to differential care and health outcomes across the gender spectrum.
  3. Advocate for greater gender, racial and ethnic diversity in health care leadership, to address existing blind spots in patient care and wellness management.
