General Program Learning Objectives

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

  1. Examine the concept of intersectionality and how an intersectional approach can be used in health care settings.
  2. Define the concept of gendered racism and its impact on the mental and physical health of Black women.
  3. Identify strategies to engage in individual, community, and systems-level interventions to disrupt gendered racism in health care settings.

Practice Gap

Both patients and providers have intersecting social identities (e.g., race, gender, etc.) that play a critical role in their interactions with the healthcare system. However, care providers often do not understand the ways in which intersecting social identities and interlocking systems of oppression can impede health for patients and impact the care provided to patients from marginalized groups, such as Black women. This lecture will highlight the importance of taking intersectionality into account in providing culturally competent, effective care, and reducing health inequities across society.
