Amy Diehl, PhD will speak on "Glass Walls: Shattering Gender Barriers in Science and Healthcare"

Despite large gains in education and credentialing over the past decades, women's advancement in STEM and healthcare professions lags disproportionately behind men. While blatant sexism still exists, most of the gaps in leadership and salary arise from biases based on ingrained gender roles and expectations. In this talk, Dr. Amy Diehl will reveal the six core dimensions of workplace gender bias that she and her team uncovered through a combination of factor analysis and qualitative research. Using this gender barrier framework, Dr. Diehl will then share key, evidence-based strategies for shattering them — in ways that benefit individuals and organizations alike.

Amy Diehl, PhD, is an award-winning information technology leader, currently serving as Chief Information Officer at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. She is also a gender equity researcher and author of the new book “Glass Walls: Shattering the Six Gender Bias Barriers Still Holding Women Back at Work.” Her writing has appeared in numerous scholarly journal articles and book chapters as well as in Harvard Business Review, Fast Company and Ms. magazine. She is also a sought-after speaker, consultant and lawsuit expert witness. Her passion is universal gender equality so that society and organizations can thrive and women can succeed.

President and CEO

President and CEO Wendy Rheault, PT, PhD, FASAHP, FNAP, who stepped into her new role on July 1, 2019, has served the university in numerous faculty and administrative capacities for nearly 40 years. Named the first provost of the institution in 2014, she spent the next four years working closely with the president, deans and vice presidents in developing academic priorities, providing strategic direction and ensuring academic accountability.

Lise Eliot, PhD

Professor of Neuroscience

Dr. Eliot’s research is centered on brain and gender development, especially the role of early environment and plasticity in neural circuits and behavior. She received a bachelor's degree in History & Science from Harvard University, a PhD in Cellular Physiology & Biophysics from Columbia University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Eliot has authored scientific articles and two highly-praised books: "What's Going On in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life," and "Pink Brain, Blue Brain: How Small Differences Grow Into Troublesome Gaps."

"Re-defining gender roles in science and healthcare"

Allison Daminger, PhD

Allison Daminger is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on how and why gender continues to shape individuals’ experiences at home and at work, even as support for gender-egalitarianism has grown. Dr. Daminger’s first book, Thinking Gender, is forthcoming from Princeton University Press in 2025. In it, she draws on more than 170 interviews with members of both same- and different-gender couples to illuminate the underappreciated cognitive dimension of household work and reveal how and why this labor is gendered.

Dr. Kimberley Darey, a member of RFU’s Board of Trustees and President of Elmhurst hospital, began her career as a chemist working in the pharmaceutical industry before changing careers and entering Chicago Medical School. After being in private practice, later she became the Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Elmhurst Hospital. Dr. Darey is a member of Elmhurst Hospital Foundation Board. She serves as a member of the Elmhurst Outpatient Surgery Center Board and member of the Board of Managers for Illinois Health Partners. She also serves as Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and the Health Equity Taskforce. Dr. Darey is a native Chicagoan and a proud, loving mother of a son and wife to her husband of 20 years. She believes in paving the way for others and making a difference in this world by spreading kindness and compassion. She is passionate about blessing the next generation by mentoring young adults interested in scientific fields and medical students utilizing her personal time and resources.

Danny Pancirer (they/them) is a first-year physician assistant student at 水蜜桃视频 Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Danny is a dedicated advocate for fostering trust between patients and healthcare providers to enhance health outcomes. With years of experience working closely with marginalized communities, including individuals living with HIV and transgender and gender nonconforming patients, Danny has been instrumental in promoting inclusive healthcare practices. Their commitment lies in transforming the medical field into a more inclusive and nonjudgmental environment, particularly for transgender, nonbinary, and intersex communities, who have historically faced and continue to face systemic oppression.

Susanna Calkins, PhD (Moderator)

Susanna Calkins is the Director of the Nexus for Faculty Success and is an associate professor in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. She holds an MA and PhD in early modern British history from Purdue University, focusing on women and gender, and a MS in Higher Education Administration from Northwestern University. She has co-authored two books on learning and teaching: Learning and Teaching in Higher Education: The Reflective Professional (Sage 2009), and The Reflective Professional (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2022), and is working on a third book, Reflective Doctoral Education (Bloomsbury Publishing 2025). She is keenly interested in the impacts of gender and racial inequity on teaching and learning.
